The black-and-white engravings by the Bernese artist Wolfgang Zät (1962) are remarkable in a number of ways. They are striking both for their monumental scale – they must be seen from a considerable distance to take in the whole effect – and for their intense blackness, and plunge us into an immersive visual experience. Hovering on the borderline between figuration and abstraction, Zät’s work frees the imagination from what we can see and sweeps us up into extraordinary landscapes.
