School of Applied Arts
When La Chaux-de-Fonds’ art school was created in 1870, it had close links with the watchmaking industry. It was founded by the Society of Master Engravers with the goal of developing students’ artistic skills, particularly through studying drawing and ornamentation. Its engraving class saw major success in the early 20th century. To this day, the school trains engravers for the watch industry. They work on watch dials, decorative casings and movements, in steel, brass, copper, gold, silver or pewter, and make skilful use of tools and machines.
