This painting depicts a group of dancers known as the sylphs, air spirits believed to live in the woods and inspire artists. Rendered by local artist Frédéric Zuberbühler, also known as Fritz Zuber-Bühler, the sylphs are depicted dancing in a circle. Zuber-Bühler, who initially studied drawing in his hometown moved to Paris and then Italy before finally returning to Paris, where he ended his life. He is best known for his portraiture.
Displayed at MBAL as part of the exhibition la scia del monte ou les utopistes magnétiques (2024), this artwork engaged with the Monte Verità historical archive. It resonates with the exhibition’s theme of dance, which holds significance in the history of this hill of utopias, particularly with Rudolf Laban’s School of Movement Art.
