In addition to photographic images, the Underwood brothers produced and distributed stereoscopic images as well. They were pioneers in reportage photography. Established in 1881 in Kansas, Underwood & Underwood became the world’s largest publisher of stereoscopic views, producing a staggering 10 million views a year. Later, the company shifted towards commercialization, hiring freelance photographers. In 1910, they ventured into news photography, eventually selling its vast stock and rights to the Keystone View Company in 1920.
This photograph, dated around 1920, shows young Miss Edith Dahlberg, a Seattle artist, admiring a snow-covered Mount Rainier (Washington State, USA) through a massive frame. Acquired by the museum in 2021 through a generous donation from David Campany, the work was shown at MBAL during the Montagne Magique Mystique exhibition (2021).
